Shabbat Zoom Gathering – Friday, July 3, 2020 Celebrating Shabbat via Zoom lead by Judaic Coordinator, Hagit Oren, has become a wonderful community building ritual. All JSDD residents are energized to welcome the Sabbath each week with their friends in other homes.  Last week, Rachel recited the prayer for lighting the candles and Adam followed with the blessing over the grape juice. Together each resident said the blessing over the Challah and then all recited the prayer for the sick. The ultimate 4th of July Summer cookout was held at JSDD’s Millburn home. The residents gathered at the outdoor table, which was decorated in festive red, white and blue, while the grill was fired up and the mouthwatering meal was prepared.  A perfect holiday menu with several  delicious dishes were enjoyed by the residents and Direct Support Professionals (DSP’s). Catrice B, Assistant Manager of the Parsippany home is celebrating 11 years working for JSDD.  “My job is fulfilling and allows me to watch as the residents’ personalities reveal their interests and as they develop and grow,” said Catrice. “The most joy for me is seeing the men I work with gain independence and accomplish their goals.”   In early March, with the implementation of the stay at home order, Catrice was instrumental in organizing activities for the residents.  A Smart TV was installed in the home allowing the five housemates to participate in WAE Online Virtual classes via Zoom. The Parsippany Home gathered around their outdoor table enjoying a delicious meal with their devoted Direct Support Professional staff.  The scent of freshly cut grass was in the cool breeze that surrounded the patio while the residents were laughing, smiling and relishing having their meal outdoors.  With the start of summer upon us, the patio has become their favorite place to dine.

Tyiesha B has been a devoted employee for 10 years.  She manages and coordinates the daily activities of JSDD’s West Orange Condo, but began her tenure at the West Caldwell Home, where she was (and still is) beloved by the six residents.  “Working with the men in my home has brought me so much joy.  I can write a book of all the great times we have had together”, said Tyiesha.  It is fulfilling for her to communicate with the  residents that they are not limited by their disability and they can do anything they set their minds to.   “The men of my home are truly my family.  My own family does not reside in New Jersey”, said Tyiesha.  During […]
