What is your first memory of JSDD?
I connected with Harry first and the initial word I would use to describe JSDD is, welcoming. When I visited the new building, I had the feeling of it being a welcoming and supportive environment. I was also very impressed by the building itself.
What has most surprised you about working with JSDD?
Things run smoothly, and it is organized, everything seems to flow well.
What are 3 words to describe JSDD?
Welcoming, Loving and Honest
What do you find most challenging about your work?
I wish I had more time with each member. One member comes to mind. She just wants a friend to communicate with. The time constraint is challenging, but it is a blessing that I can be the person who can listen. When our time is up, it can be hard to leave her.
What do you wish other people knew about JSDD?
That it exists because it is a reassuring feeling that a place like JSDD is real.
I would feel comfortable sending loved ones to the homes or to the WAE Center.
When your friends/family find out that you work for JSDD what do they say or ask?
They think it is a natural and perfect fit for my personality.
Tell me about someone who has influenced you while working with JSDD?
Judy is a member and resident that I work with. Her story is heavy, and she cannot communicate easily, but in my fist session with her we discussed her family and were able to backtrack some of her family history together.
What part of your job are you most excited about?
There is always something new within the field to explore and new things to try.
What is on your wish list for the next 5 years with JSDD?
Getting JSDD members and residents more involved with the community.
Getting out more, I think it’s important for the community to know JSDD exists.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about working with JSDD?
They should come to visit because being here would tell you what kind of place this is.
Before working at JSDD what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?
I have done speech forever and have always worked along the lines of healthcare education. I have done adaptive sports: surfing, snowboarding, skiing with individuals with disabilities. I am outdoorsy so I love any chance to get outside with those I am working with.
What is your favorite thing for Lunch?
Chia bowl from Playa Bowls
What is something about you that is not on your resume?
I have wanderlust. I would spend my last dollar on travel. In the future I hope to retire and live in a camper with my husband and hit the road.
